Today marks the 42nd anniversary of the landmark Roe v. Wade decision. For more than four decades this case has helped shape the lives and experiences of millions of women across the country, protecting their right to choose and control their own bodies. And that’s something we at Blue State Digital think is worth celebrating.
Even with these protections, though, extremist politicians around the country have managed to pass over 200 restrictions on access to reproductive health care in the last three years alone. This, coupled with even more threats to reproductive freedom from the anti-choice Republicans in Congress, means organizations like the Center For Reproductive Rights are more crucial than ever.
BSD has been partnering with the Center for Reproductive Rights for the past year to help expand their digital fundraising and communications programs. As the only global reproductive rights organization that defends women’s access to reproductive care in the courts, the Center’s work is paramount to the establishment of fair and equal rights for women around the world.
In response to increasingly widespread attacks, the Center is launching a new campaign: War On Women Is Over (If You Want It). The initiative was inspired by the power and vision of Yoko Ono and John Lennon’s Vietnam War protest campaign—War is Over (If You Want It). With permission from Yoko Ono, the Center is using this simple message to educate a wide audience about the profound threats to women’s freedom, plant the seed of personal accountability with reproductive rights supporters, and empower them to take action. This movement and slogan stand as a reminder that the extremist attacks on women’s rights and their ability to choose may feel overwhelming but they are not insurmountable.
As we transition into a new year and a new Congress, we’re honored and excited to stand with the Center for Reproductive Rights in this campaign and in their fight to protect and advance the constitutionally guaranteed protections from Roe v. Wade (and beyond).
