At Blue State, we believe in helping organizations do good work better. Blue Staters come from the non-profit, brand, and political worlds. Together, we bring our expertise in raising money and telling stories to clients who are making positive change in our communities, country, and the world. Meet Isaiah Dawson, a Partnerships Associate, who shares his path to Blue State in this installment of a series about how we got here…
Hi, I’m Isaiah Dawson, a Partnerships Associate.
At Blue State, I’ve seen firsthand how my colleagues live out our mission — working together to overcome obstacles, lift up progressive voices, and support our partners in making a real difference around the world. Our writers, designers, and video producers tell powerful stories. Our strategists and analysts create innovative strategies. And across the board, we push each other to think bigger, do better, and stay focused on fairness for everyone. That shared sense of purpose is what drew me here.
My journey to Blue State began long before I ever set foot here — back when I was a freshman at Howard University. I was drawn to Howard’s rich legacy of shaping bold leaders, its pulse within the Washington, D.C. community, and its fresh take on the Black experience worldwide. Howard lit a fire in me for social impact. My political science, international affairs, and public relations coursework gave me a broader view of the world and practical skills I use at Blue State daily.
Like many HBCUs, Howard has long worked with African universities to create educational programs that honor the deep ties between the African diaspora and these schools. Because of this, my professors and advisors encouraged me to study abroad in Gaborone, Botswana, where I discovered a culture that values community, shared identity, and taking care of the environment — values that starkly differ from division, individualism, and environmental exploitation.
Studying in Botswana and traveling throughout Southern Africa opened my eyes to how communities can thrive when they work together. I saw firsthand how traditions of collaboration strengthen economies and spark real, lasting change. These lessons stay with me and guide how I approach building meaningful partnerships at Blue State — always focused on empowering people and making a true impact.
HBCUs have always been a lifeline for opportunity, strength, and building connections across the globe. My time at Howard, and my experiences in Botswana and South Africa, taught me the power of working together to shape economies and spark real social change.
Today, with federal funding freezes and growing attacks on diversity, equity, and inclusion, HBCUs face mounting challenges. I believe digital equity and philanthropic investment are key to keeping them strong. At Blue State, we work alongside organizations dedicated to equity and supporting voices that demand change. In my role, I focus on building partnerships with clients that reflect the lessons I learned at Howard — investing in community, opening doors, and ensuring these vital institutions continue to thrive, no matter the challenges.
