How could ethical fundraising be more effective?
Over many years nonprofit organisations, including many of our clients, have had a very honest and concerted effort to evolve their operating and fundraising models – to move away from ‘white saviorism’, and reflect the dignity and humanity of those they serve.
But most fundraising appeals out there haven’t changed as dramatically as the rhetoric, and for a simple reason – in many cases performance suffers. Many fundraisers, committed to deconstructing structural racism while also bound to raising vital funds are stuck between a rock and a hard place – how do you change your model while maintaining urgent funding for your programmes?
This is a question we are being posed by an increasing number of clients and contacts, and so in this report we will explore:
- The issue through original research with 1,494 members of the UK public
- The science of why people respond to fundraising appeals
- Why potential donors do not respond well when organisations attempt to decolonise their work
- What fundraisers can do to overcome this seemingly insurmountable challenge
